Our Day in Pictures

22 Jun

Ok, first and most importantly, we FINALLY got the air conditioning fixed, after over a week.  I don’t have a picture of that because… well, I can’t think of a good reason to take a picture of an air conditioner.

But on to the rest of the day.

Madagascar Ice Sculpture Exhibit

25 Nov

Yesterday, we took our elves to the annual Ice Exhibit at the Gaylord Texan.  It’s always fun to go to the Gaylord at Christmas time … or as Kaelin, calls it, “Santa Land.”

We enjoy touring the ice exhibit each year – it’s fascinating what artists can do with blocks of colored ice.

The kids always look forward to zooming down the ice slide.

On the drive home, the kids made sure their elves were safely buckled.

Koren said that he AND Eddie had a great time, but he got pretty quiet on the drive home.  He seems to be fighting a bug or something, and the morning activity just wore him out.  When we got home, he had a mild temperature and went straight to bed.  He seemed to feel better after a 3-hour nap, and we’re hoping he can sleep off whatever it is that’s dragging him down.  This morning he’s in good spirits and his temp has gone down, but we’re making him take it easy today since we have Jens’ birthday celebration this evening.

New York City

21 Nov

For Jens’ graduation gift, my parents generously gave the two of us a long weekend in New York City the last weekend in August.  Obviously, we didn’t know at the time that just a few weeks later, New York would be ravaged by Hurricane Sandy.  It makes me glad that we were able to see and enjoy it when we did.

Here are a few exerpts from the photo album:

I really like Central Park.

Underside of a bridge in Central Park

This guy really wanted me to play his instrument. I did not want to play his instrument. I just wanted to take his picture.

The shoes I had to buy to walk through Central Park. Because somehow I always forget walking shoes when I visit New York.

Japanese Pizza. Incredible. I will make a point of eating at this restaurant every time I come back to New York for the rest of my life.

Can you find me?

Sidewalks are for parking.

We saw Wicked! It was awesome! Squeeeeeee!

Lunch with the President. It was just after the RNC, so this was funny at the time.

Our little guest, who stayed perched on the hotel room window for almost an entire day.

Obligatory Grand Central Station photo

One of the things I like about New York is that everything is “normal” there.  Woman walking down the street in an enormous feathered headdress?  Not a single head turns as she walks by.  Guy in his underwear sitting on a bench?  Nobody bats an eye.  Shaman performing a healing ceremony in the middle of the street?  Totally normal.

Woody and Papa Smurf hanging out on the street corner?  Happens every day.

Also, I like how every street has its own personality, and they’re all very distinct.  You can be walking through China Town, cross the street, and suddenly you’re in Little Italy.  Turn a corner, and you run smack into a Brazillian festival.

More proof we were there:

Thanks, Mom & Dad, for a great trip that was lots of fun!  And also for babysitting.  From what I hear, the kids had a pretty good time as well.

Western Angry Birds Birthday Party

26 Oct

We had Kaelin’s birthday party at Storybook Ranch this year.  Between pony rides, a petting zoo, bounce houses and a hay maze, the kids stayed busy every minute.  We even ran out of time for the hay ride that was included in the package.  Kaelin had a blast with all her friends and I got to meet some of the new friends in her class.

Petting Zoo

23 Sep

I took Kaelin and her best friend to tour a little ranch that we are considering for the location of Kaelin’s birthday party.  She was sold the minute she saw the petting zoo, and it just about took an act of God to pull her away when it was time to leave.

Family Reunion

07 Sep

We flew to Denver and back in one day in order to attend a reunion on Jens’ side of the family.  It was a lot of fun and totally exhausting… especially for Koren, who – while we were sitting in the airport waiting for our delayed (!!!) flight home – kept moaning and whimpering about how the only thing he wanted in the whole world was his “comfy little bed.”  Poor kid was just beside himself after getting up at 4:30am, no nap, playing himself into exhaustion at the park, and not getting home until 11pm.

The reunion itself was tons of fun though.  We met at a park and the kids played and played and played, while the adults visited.  This is a side of the family we don’t get to see often, which is a shame, since they’re all pretty wonderful people and we really enjoy the times we DO get to spend with them.

Here are a few highlights…

Rocco – 13 Weeks

28 Aug

I love this kitty.  He ventured upstairs for the first time today and is currently passed out in my lap.  He’s a total sweetie with a little bit of impishness in him.  He was trying so hard today to stalk the dog while said dog was napping… but he’s still afraid of him so every time Hastings lifted his head Rocco would scurry away.  While I was folding clothes this evening, he had more fun than I thought was possible with an empty laundry basket.

Rocco

26 Aug

This is Rocco.  He joined our family last Saturday at 12 weeks old.  I picked him up just outside of Austin and drove home with him through some pretty torrential downpours.  What should have been a 3.5 hour return trip turned into 5 hour drive with massive traffic.  Blech.

Kaelin has been begging for a pet for several months now, but even though we had committed to get Rocco several weeks ago, the kids knew nothing of our new companion until they walked into the bedroom and he was there (we told them to come downstairs because they had some laundry to put up.

I have since been told multiple times that I am the BEST! MOM! in the WHOLE! UNIVERSE! – and I have the video recordings to prove it should they change their minds in the future.

Once we got home, he adjusted pretty quickly.  He was pretty worn out from his big day, and immediately found a nice place to nest on my pillow.

Later that evening, he curled up behind me and fell asleep on his back while grooming himself.

He’s a super cuddle bug and his motor starts running the second you touch him – even if he’s mad at you for not letting him explore the closet.  He loves to play and will chase just about anything – including the pants you’re trying to put on in the morning or your feet under the covers even when you’re CERTAIN you haven’t moved.

I’ll have more pictures and videos to post of him in the near future I’m sure.  Kittens have a way of hijacking your focus, even when they aren’t actually doing anything.
