New York City

21 Nov

For Jens’ graduation gift, my parents generously gave the two of us a long weekend in New York City the last weekend in August.  Obviously, we didn’t know at the time that just a few weeks later, New York would be ravaged by Hurricane Sandy.  It makes me glad that we were able to see and enjoy it when we did.

Here are a few exerpts from the photo album:

I really like Central Park.

Underside of a bridge in Central Park

This guy really wanted me to play his instrument. I did not want to play his instrument. I just wanted to take his picture.

The shoes I had to buy to walk through Central Park. Because somehow I always forget walking shoes when I visit New York.

Japanese Pizza. Incredible. I will make a point of eating at this restaurant every time I come back to New York for the rest of my life.

Can you find me?

Sidewalks are for parking.

We saw Wicked! It was awesome! Squeeeeeee!

Lunch with the President. It was just after the RNC, so this was funny at the time.

Our little guest, who stayed perched on the hotel room window for almost an entire day.

One of the things I like about New York is that everything is “normal” there.  Woman walking down the street in an enormous feathered headdress?  Not a single head turns as she walks by.  Guy in his underwear sitting on a bench?  Nobody bats an eye.  Shaman performing a healing ceremony in the middle of the street?  Totally normal.

Woody and Papa Smurf hanging out on the street corner?  Happens every day.

Also, I like how every street has its own personality, and they’re all very distinct.  You can be walking through China Town, cross the street, and suddenly you’re in Little Italy.  Turn a corner, and you run smack into a Brazillian festival.

More proof we were there:

Thanks, Mom & Dad, for a great trip that was lots of fun!  And also for babysitting.  From what I hear, the kids had a pretty good time as well.

Family Reunion

07 Sep

We flew to Denver and back in one day in order to attend a reunion on Jens’ side of the family.  It was a lot of fun and totally exhausting… especially for Koren, who – while we were sitting in the airport waiting for our delayed (!!!) flight home – kept moaning and whimpering about how the only thing he wanted in the whole world was his “comfy little bed.”  Poor kid was just beside himself after getting up at 4:30am, no nap, playing himself into exhaustion at the park, and not getting home until 11pm.

The reunion itself was tons of fun though.  We met at a park and the kids played and played and played, while the adults visited.  This is a side of the family we don’t get to see often, which is a shame, since they’re all pretty wonderful people and we really enjoy the times we DO get to spend with them.

Here are a few highlights…

Cousin fistbumps

My little hooligans

The kids adore their Auntie Choo.

Hanging out

Mr. Sunshine. At least, during this point of the day.

Florida 2012: Dinner Cruise

15 Jul

Wednesdays are Family Night on the dinner cruise, so we took advantage of the opportunity.

In the ticket line

Jassy’s reaction any time Kaelin picks her up is to plant long kisses on her face.

While waiting to board, we stopped in the gift shop and Kaelin picked up her fourth stuffed animal souvenir. My daughter might be mildly obsessed with stuffed animals.

It was a great time, mostly due to two things:  Fruity coconut drinks that were ohsoyummy (yay more commemorative cups!)…

And watching the girls tear it up on the dance floor.

They were hilarious.  They started in the aisle by our table…

Florida 2012: Red Robin

15 Jul

We worked up quite an appetite at Miracle Strip, so we went to Red Robin for dinner.  Unfortunately, the kitchen staff was apparently working with half a burner, as the food took exceptionally long to prepare.  We had been there for about an hour and a half when the server finally came over with a tray of baskets.  To our dismay, he was only bringing us fries to snack on while we waited.

Nonetheless, the girls did surprisingly well with the wait, and Jassy even treated us to a performance of… interpretive dancing? with a piece of ice.  This kid cracks me up.

Florida 2012: Restaurant

15 Jul

I have no idea what the name of this restaurant was.  We took a drive to Destin this particular morning and ate lunch there.  The food was ok and the tables were sticky, but the atmosphere was quite pleasant with open-windowed views of the water.  It continues to amaze me how Florida’s in-the-shade temperature in the summer is so perfect.  Texas, you could learn a thing or two about summer temperatures from Florida.  Just sayin’.

Have I mentioned these girls are silly?

Florida 2012: Miracle Strip

15 Jul

Pier Park is a massive shopping center, which we visited several times during the week on account of the fact that it contains a Super Target.  Pier Park is also attached to Miracle Strip – a mini carnival and shopping area.  The Strip boasts all kinds of rides and entertainment for kids, and we spent several hours there over the course of two days.

One of the first things we found was a giant inflated … pillow? … that kids could jump around on.  The girls expended a lot of energy on this, and had a blast – especially since we were some of the only people there.

And of course, we had to try the various gravity defying rides. Read the rest of this entry »

Florida 2012: Putt-Putt

15 Jul

After our dinner at Pineapple Willy’s, we played Putt Putt.  We were not the only people in town with this idea, and had to wait at every hole for the groups in front of us to finish – while being careful not to hold up the people behind us for too long.  Still, we had a great time and I learned a thing or two about putt putt from my niece.

The place had a jungle theme

and I think the kids enjoyed the animals every bit as much as the golfing experience

…Maybe more.

Florida 2012: The Non-Salty Water

15 Jul

Before she warmed up to the ocean, Kaelin insisted on spending her water-time in the pool.  Jassy, who we’re pretty sure is part fish, was more than happy to come along.
