Day 10

Today, I’m thankful that the TERMITES that were recently discovered in our yard have not yet made it into our house, and that we were able to take preventative measures to ensure that they DON’T get in.

Day 9

Today I’m thankful for my housekeepers.  Even though I have to rush around like a crazy person the day before to get everything straightened before they come, at least I don’t have to THEN rush around doing the actual scrubbing, mopping and vacuuming too.  Because let’s be honest.  If I did?  It simply wouldn’t get done.  Instead, I come home to a sparkling house that looks like somebody waived a magic wand over it.  I love Thursdays.

Funny story… I recently discovered that for the last 5 years, I’ve had my housekeeper’s name wrong.  Like, completely WRONG.  I have no idea where I got the idea that her last name was Fuentes.  She finally corrected me.  But what’s even funnier?  I’m not the only one who had her name wrong.  And the other client?  ALSO thought her last name was Fuentes.

It’s a weird world.

Day 8

Today, I’m thankful for a clean bill of oral health from the kids’ dentist.  Both had appointments yesterday, and both passed with no cavities!  After the Great Cavity Debacle of 2009, where Kaelin had to get 8 (EIGHT!!!) cavities filled, which required two trips to the dentist and a prescription for Valium, a good report from the dentist is always a big sigh of relief!

Day 7

Plastic ornaments!!!  The world’s greatest invention.  For real.  I have no idea why it took me so long to switch.

This year, I left all the glass ornaments in the garage and bought a new assortment of plastic ones.  My kids dropped ornaments 9 times while decorating the tree and WE DIDN’T HAVE TO CLEAN UP A SINGLE SHATTERED MESS.

AND… even I dropped an ornament that would have shattered into a bazillion life-threatening pieces.  But instead, it bounced.

Plastic ornaments.

Best. Thing. Ever.

Day 6

Today, I’m thankful for my Christmas tree.  It’s up and decorated and the lights are on and it’s filling my living room with awesomeness.  I know, a little early this year.  But I didn’t get to decorate last year, so I’m making up for it.

It’s hard for me to describe the amount of joy this tree is bringing me this year.  Every time I walk past the living room I have to stop and stare at it.

Last year, we almost didn’t have a tree at all.  At the last minute, Jens abducted a small one from the neighbor’s property.  We didn’t have a saw and ended up using a kitchen knife to trim the bottom.  It still had snow on it when we erected it in the stand.  It dropped half its needles within a few days.

This year, the tree is fake, but so much easier to deal with and, honestly, so much prettier.  It doesn’t smell as good, but that’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make in order to have it for 2 months instead of just a couple of weeks.

Honestly, this picture doesn’t do it justice.  It’s gorgeous.  Just take my word for it.

Day 5

Today, I’m thankful for digital photography.  My photo vault is almost 300GB of my computer.  I’m thankful that I have so many bits and pieces of my family’s life frozen for eternity so that no mater how pitiful my memory, I will always have those memories preserved exactly as they were.  When I think of all the pieces of my own life and history that are forever lost to a defective memory and poor organizational skills, it makes me sad.

So instead, I’m choosing to think of and be thankful for the photos I do have.

And also my childhood friend, Melissa, who volunteers her time and skill year after year to take pictures of my family for the holidays.  Even on days when the kids are running 1,000 miles per hour and we can’t even get them to sit still long enough to take a picture together (which is, um, most of the time).

Day 4

Today I’m thankful for the organic farm that delivers fresh dairy, meat and eggs to our door every week.  Between that and Costco, I haven’t driven to an actual grocery store in … months.  And the milk is the best milk I’ve ever had.  I have recently converted to skim milk, which is pretty much like the Pope deciding to become a Seventh Day Adventist.  But their skim milk?  Tastes like anybody else’s 2%.  It’s wonderful.  It makes me happy.

Day 3

I am thankful for funny kids.  They’re creative and spunky and they always keep me on my toes.  I’m thankful that my kids have so much life in them that they wear me out on many days.

Recently the kids were upstairs entertaining themselves in the playroom.  Koren has an automatic baseball-pitching machine that pitches soft little rubber balls.  We heard the whirr of the machine, followed by a FOOMP sound, and then hysterical laughter.

And then we heard it again.

WHIRRRR…

FOOMP!

“BAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!”

And again.

We went to investigate.  As we peeked into the room, we saw Kaelin put a small stuffed animal in the machine, and Koren run to stand in front of it, facing away from the machine.  The machine shot the animal out, which then flew through the air and hit Koren in the butt.  Which was, apparently, the funniest thing either of them had ever witnessed.

“BAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!”

My kids are insane.  I love it.
